4 of the Shortest Managerial Reigns in Football History

3. Martin Ling – Nine Days at Cambridge United

Martin LingAfter a long career as a player which included stints at clubs like Southend United, Swindon Town and Leyton Orient, Martin Ling turned his attention to management and has so far taken charge at Leyton Orient, Torquay United and Cambridge United. Ling’s first stint as manager of Cambridge however, was brief to say the least.

After a successful 2008/09 season, the then Cambridge manager Gary Brabin resigned due to differences with club chairman George Rolls and Ling was given the job. Rolls however, proved to be impossible for the new man at the helm to work with too and Ling resigned just nine days later, also citing the chairman as the reason why. Rolls did eventually take the hint though, left the club the day after Ling’s resignation and cleared the way for the manager to return within a fortnight.
