One of just two currently active NBA players in our countdown, Dirk Nowitzki was born in Wurzberg in Germany in 1978 and was the son of a professional basketball playing mother and a handball playing father.

Athletic prowess was clearly in Nowitzki’s genes therefore, and he entered the NBA as the ninth pick in the 1998 draft. It was the Milwaukee Bucks who initially selected the power forward but he was immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks and has represented them for the 17 years since.

Now widely thought of as one of the greatest power forwards in NBA history, Nowitzki’s 28,119 total points have come in 1,265 regular season games and have helped the Mavericks to the playoffs on 14 occasions and the championship for the only time in their history back in 2011.
